Writing:
Students will complete the final draft of their first research essay by October 14th. They will then move into the pre-writing stages of their narrative writing unit through a program called, “National Novel Writing Month,” which begins on November 1st!
Reading:
Students are wrapping-up our first literary book of the school year, called Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare. It is an historical - fiction novel about survival in the Maine wilderness and relations between white settlers and American Indians.
Social Studies:
Students are participating in a government unit that involves learning about our three branches of government, how a law is passed, and what the president's responsibilities are. We will also be covering some important issues facing our country right now and the process of voting for a new president. Students will participate in a "Students Vote 2016 Election" through Newsela where they are able to share in the thrill of casting their vote online with students across our nation and compare their ideas with their peers.
Science:
Students completed their most recent experiment on vascular plants. They are studying xylem, phloem, and vascular bundles and comparing plant and animal systems. They are locating and classifying leaves as well.
